San Diego's New Trash Tax?

At La Jolla Property Group, we believe part of our job is to look after the homeowners in our community — not just when it comes to buying and selling homes, but in protecting the value and rights of ownership itself.

Right now, San Diego is proposing a new “Solid Waste Management Fee” that would end free trash pickup for single-family homes — a service that has been covered by your existing property taxes for over a century. If passed, this would add up to $47.59 per month to your tax bill starting in 2026, with planned annual increases.

Many homeowners don’t even know this is coming down the pike. But it is. And it will affect every qualifying property in La Jolla.

We must band together now.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 9, 2025, and the city is requiring formal written protests in order to block the fee. If a majority of affected property owners submit protests, the city cannot implement this new charge.

How to Submit Your Protest:

Write a letter opposing the fee, or use page 6 of the PDF

  • Include your property address or parcel number.

  • Sign it with your name.

  • Mail or hand-deliver it by June 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM to:

Office of the City Clerk, 202 C St., MS 2T, San Diego, CA 92101.

You can also deliver your protest in person at the City Council meeting on June 9 at 2:00 PM.

We at La Jolla Property Group are committed to keeping our community informed and protected. But this will take all of us. Please join us in standing up for our homeowners.
